The first competition day of the XVIII Vladimir Salnikov International Cup has ended in St. Petersburg. In the leaders of the medal standings, St. Petersburg residents – 3 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze in the individual competition, plus a victory in the mixed relay. Oleg Kostin and Sofya Dyakova headed the list of contenders for the Silver Sharks.

On December 19, the Vladimir Salnikov Cup was launched at the Nevskaya Volna Aquatics Center in St. Petersburg. At the opening ceremony, four-time Olympic champion and First Vice-president of the Russian Aquatics Federation Vladimir Salnikov congratulated the tournament on its coming of age. He stressed that it is particularly significant that on this date, the 18th anniversary of the Cup, the audience of both St. Petersburg and whole Russia will see our strongest athletes who have just returned from the victorious World Cup.

World medalists confirmed the words of Vladimir Salnikov and again took first places in their heats. Ilya Borodin won the 400m medley. Yegor Kornev won the 50m freestyle. Arina Surkova won the 50m freestyle. Five-time world gold medalist Miron Lifintsev, together with Kirill Prigoda, Daria Tatarinova and Alexandra Kuznetsova won the 4x50m mixed combined relay under the flag of St. Petersburg. We also note the victory of another participant of the world Championship - Yulia Efimova in the 50m breaststroke.

However, the strongest results in World Aquatics points were shown by those who remained a little in the shadows in Hungary. The huge level of competition is a remarkable feature of the Vladimir Salnikov Cup. In the men's event, Oleg Kostin scored the best points of the first day, only 4 hundredths ahead of Kirill Prigodu in the 50m breaststroke. And among women, Sofia Dyakova is ahead for 1st place in the final heat of the 800m freestyle.

Other winners of the first day: Alexander Kudashev (200m butterfly), Anastasia Kolpakova (200m butterfly), Irina Zvyagintseva (400m combined swimming), Dmitry Savenko (200m backstroke), Milana Stepanova (200m backstroke), Daniil Shatalov (400m freestyle).

The Cup is held at the Central Exhibition Hall "Nevskaya Volna" at the address: 8 John Reed Street, lit. A, building 2, accommodating 1,500 fans. 41 final swims await athletes and spectators in 2024. 13 sets of awards have already been awarded on the first day. Tomorrow, December 20, 14 finals will be held. Another 14 - on the final day.
