I would say the biggest achievement of all was the athletic edge, the struggle for victory, the sporting atmosphere, and the drive that everyone — the athletes, the honoured guests and the spectators — all felt.

The tournament will take place on 28-29 December 2010 in the 25-metre pool in St Petersburg’s Tsentr Plavaniya swimming complex, located at 10 Ulitsa Khlopina. About 300 of the world’s strongest athletes will be competing for the main prize, a silver shark. Eighty eight of the competitors are natives of St Petersburg.
The tournament is classified in FINA’s calendar as an international tournament for swimmers of the very highest standard. Almost all of the stars of Russian swimming will be representing the national team, including 2010 world champions and record-breakers Nikita Lobintsev, Danila Izotov, Evgeny Lagunov and Aleksandr Sukhorukov. Twenty eight international athletes have confirmed their participation in the tournament. The field is led by several-times world champion and winner of the 2007 Salnikov Cup, American Randall Ball, and the Olympic champions and 2010 relay champions Inge Dekker and Hinkeline Schreuder.
For the first time in 4 years the 4x100m freestyle relay is included in the tournament programme. The tournament will take place in the large arena at the swimming complex. This will allow up to 1000 spectators to attend each day.
The tournament is supported by the St Petersburg Administration, the All-Russian Swimming Federation and the St Petersburg Swimming Federation. It is funded primarily by sponsors.
The tournament’s opening ceremony will take place on 28 December at 17.00. The medal ceremony will be held on 29 December at 20.00 in the large arena. Preliminaries - 10.00 to 12.00 Finals - 17.00 to 19.00 Entrance is free.

A press conference is scheduled for 13.00 on 27 December at the Committee for Physical Education and Sport The press conference will be attended by Vladimir Salnikov, President of the All-Russian Swimming Federation and Four-time Olympic swimming champion, and Vyacheslav Chazov, Deputy Chair of St Petersburg Committee for Physical Culture and Sports.
In the large arena at the swimming complex a fan zone will be organised, where spectators will have the chance to speak to the swimmers. For this, spectators must be accredited for the duration of the tournament on the Cup’s website, www.salnikovcup.ru
