Welcome to St.Petersburg, to V th Salnikov Cup , 17-18 December 2011

I would say the biggest achievement of all was the athletic edge, the struggle for victory, the sporting atmosphere, and the drive that everyone — the athletes, the honoured guests and the spectators — all felt.

The V International Vladimir Salnikov Cup Swimming Tournament concludes with a new Russian record

The Silver Shark statuettes went to the winners of the tournament, the Russian athletes Nikolai Skvortsov and Elena Sokolova. Nikolai Skvortsov’s best result came on the very first day of the tournament, when he earned 961 FINA points during the 200m butterfly race. Elena Sokolova finished a 400m freestyle race in 4:01:93 (earning 915 FINA points), setting a new Russian record.  This year, commemorative prizes were also awarded to promising young athletes who showed the best results at the tournament. These went to two swimmers from Moscow: 18-year-old Dmitry Ermakov and 16-year-old Irina Novikova. The tournament welcomed more than 330 athletes from 11 countries.

The team led by Anastasia Zueva won the 4x50m mixed medley relay – the 2011 tournament’s most closely-fought event – with a time of 1:39:71. Anastasia picked Nikita Konovalov, Stanislav Lakhtyukhov, and Daniela Schreiber for her relay team. Second place went to the team led by South African athlete Cameron van der Burg (consisting of Cameron van der Burg, Sergei Makov, Daria Tsvetkova, and Svetlana Khokhlova). German swimmer Britta Steffen’s team took third place (consisting of Britta Steffen, Helge Meeuw, Sergei Geibel, and Theresa Michalak). Alexander Dale Oen’s team was disqualified for violating tournament rules. A total of eight teams led by the tournament’s top athletes took part in the relay. Remember that last year, the tournament added a new 4x100m crawl relay race. The year before that, Stanislav Donets, Evgeny Korotyshkin, Danila Izotov, and Sergei Geibel participated in the relay race and set a world record.

Dutch athlete Job Kienhuis won the tournament’s main event – the 1,500 m race – completing it in 14 minutes and 30:14 seconds. This was his first time competing in the Vladimir Salnikov Cup, but that did not stop him from landing in second place in the tournament’s best athletes ratings. Danila Izotov won the final 200m freestyle race for men on the second day of the tournament with the world’s third best result of the season at 1:42:83, earning him 901 FINA points. Another new face at the Cup, Norwegian swimmer Alexander Dale Oen, won the gold when he finished the 100m breaststroke race in 58:07. Evgeny Korotyshkin took a decisive lead in the 100m butterfly race with 50:27. This was his fourth victory in this event in the five years of the Cup’s history. American athlete Randall Bal won the 50m backstroke race, finishing in 23:59 seconds.

The 200m backstroke race went to Anton Anchin with a time of 1 minute and 53:17 seconds. Daniela Schreiber from Germany took a decisive lead in the 100m freestyle race. Valentina Artemyeva won the 50m women’s breaststroke race, pulling ahead of Yulia Yefimova by 0:11 seconds. With a one-second lead, the 200m race went to Anastasia Chaun. Nobody could compete with Yana Martynova in the 400m medley race: she led her rivals by 4:77 seconds. German athlete Theresa Michalak finished the 100m medley race with a lead of nearly one second.
Anastasia Zueva showed the best results in the 100m backstroke race, with a time of 57:59. Last year’s 200m butterfly competition winner Kim Vandenberg from the US repeated her winning performance, with this year’s result of 2 minutes and 7 seconds. Belarusian athlete Svetlana Khokhlova took first place in the 50m butterfly race with a time of 25:95.
